Sand Rock falls at Cleveland

CLEVELAND -Daquarrius Phillips ran for 140 yards on 12 carries and scored five touchdowns to lead the Cleveland Panthers past Sand Rock 56-13 in Class 2A, Region 6 football action on Thursday.

Logan Washburn connected 12-of-14 pass attempts for 192 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 70 yards on five carries.

The Panthers (7-2, 5-2) built a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and held a 42-0 advantage at halftime. They extended the lead to 56-0 at the end of the third quarter before Sand Rock (3-6, 2-5) got on the scoreboard.

Ethan Clanton scored on a 7-yard touchdown run five seconds into the fourth quarter. He added the extra point. Ace Ashley connected with Tru Graham on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 4:59 left in the game for the final.

Ashley completed 12-of-25 pass attempts for 224 yards and a touchdown. Heath Driver was his top receiver with four catches for 86 yards.

Jacob Cornejo caught three passes for 72 yards. He also ran for 60 yards on five carries and had 7 1/2 tackles on defense, including 1 1/2 tackles for loss.

Sand Rock concludes its season next Friday at home against Cedar Bluff.
