Gaylesville cancels football game with Cedar Bluff

GAYLESVILLE – Thursday’s scheduled Class 1A, Region 7 high school football game between the Gaylesville Trojans and Cedar Bluff Tigers has been canceled due to a number of Gaylesville football players in quarantine for COVID-19.

With the forfeit, Gaylesville drops to 4-4 and 2-3 in the region. Cedar Bluff improves to 3-4 and 3-1 in region action.

It’s the second time Gaylesville has had to forfeit a game this season. The Trojans forfeited their game against Ragland on Aug. 28.

The following is a statement released by Gaylesville Principal Terry Gilbreath on Tuesday afternoon:

“Due to the number of football players quarantined under the ADPH (Alabama Department of Public Health) toolkit, Gaylesville will not be able to participate in the football contest against Cedar Bluff this Thursday, October 8, 2020.

“We were informed that a Gaylesville varsity football player tested positive for COVID-19. In following the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and Alabama Department of Public Health guidelines, we have identified and quarantined an additional three varsity football players who were exposed.

“Due to these unfortunate circumstances, we will be forced to cancel our upcoming varsity football game against Cedar Bluff.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes is always top priority. I want to thank all of the coaches, staff, nurses, and everyone that has been doing a great job and making every effort to follow the guidelines and keep our student-athletes safe.

“Decisions concerning the rest of the season will be made at the appropriate time when all safety measures can be evaluated.”
