Sheriff Shaver Warns Scammers Are Using Social Security Name and Also Sheriff’s Office Phone Number

Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver would like to inform the public scam artists are back in business in Cherokee County.

The most recent scams are centered around the Social Security Administration with the con artists telling their intended victim that their social security number has been “suspended”, and they need the person’s full name, date of birth and other personal information, in order to “re-activate” the number.

A money order or money transfer or some other form of payment may also be requested.

Sheriff Shaver reminds everyone that the Social Security Administration will never suspend a social security number or make threatening phone calls demanding personal information; furthermore his office will NEVER call you for payment, and they will NEVER call you to tell you that you can either pay or else be arrested on a warrant.

Most recently, they’ve begun using the Sheriff’s Office phone number, in hopes that it’ll give some apparent “legitimacy” to their scheme.

Should you EVER receive a phone call from anyone representing themselves as being a law enforcement officer from any agency and you’re suspicious of it, ask them for their agency, their rank, their name, and their supervisor’s name.

If they provide you with that information, hang up, look up the number and call that agency back and ask to speak with that person or their supervisor.
