Water Rescue at Little River Canyon National Preserve on Monday Afternoon / UPDATED

Fortunately – it was a close call rather than a tragic outcome at Little River Canyon National Preserve after a young woman was washed over the falls Monday afternoon.

Little River Canyon Public Information Officer Matt Switzer stated in a news release that 21 year old Kenzie Wetzel – a Douglasville, Georgia resident – was walking along the area just above Little River Falls, where she slipped on a rock – then became caught up in the current and was washed over the edge to a pool of water some 35 feet below.  She was able to make her way to the rocks in the middle of the pool, where she awaited help.

A number of agencies quickly responded to that scene – with an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency helicopter crew and the Fischer Rescue Squad teaming up to rescue the victim from her perch atop the rock.

The DeKalb Ambulance Service evaluated the woman in the parking lot before she was air-lifted to an area hospital.

Ft Payne and Dog Town fire units also assisted in the rescue operation.

No information regarding her condition has yet been made available.
