Woman Charged with Animal Cruelty Surrenders Animals to Humane Society; Many Now Available for Adoption

A court hearing that had been scheduled for last Friday (October 11th) in Cherokee County Circuit Court was cancelled, after a woman charged with 47 counts of animal cruelty earlier in the month, consented to turn over the animals to the Cherokee County Animal Shelter.

Legal counsel for Ruth Staggs entered the consent order regarding custody of those animals the day before the scheduled hearing (Thursday, October 10th).

On Tuesday, October 1st Sheriff’s Office deputies had gone to her residence on County Road 73 to perform a welfare check on a woman and, upon their arrival, found a large number of animals which appeared to be malnourished and living in unsuitable conditions.

The woman which deputies had been called about, was reportedly removed from the home, and placed under the care of DHR.  Afterwards, steps were taken to help the animals.

Dr. Jeremy Deaton, the consulting veterinarian for the Cherokee County Animal Shelter said authorities seized a total of 47 animals, while several others were found deceased at the location.  Since that time the animals, mostly dogs, cats and kittens, along with some rabbits and turtles, have been in the care of the Animal Shelter as the staff attempts to restore their health.  Unfortunately, some of those animals, despite the best efforts of everyone involved, were too far gone, and were unable to be saved.  At this point 38 still survive and are on the road to recovery.

The good news is, five of them have already been adopted and several others are ready and waiting for someone LIKE YOU to come meet your new best friend!

Veterinary care is being provided FREE of charge, however at this time monetary donations are desperately needed to help offset the cost of medical supplies for each of the animals.

Also, all will have to be spayed or neutered before they can be released to the loving, caring, forever home that they so richly deserve.
