Fire crews remain on the scene of a 75,000 square foot warehouse fire off of Highway 77 in Attalla. On Monday afternoon Etowah County 9-1-1 confirmed that they were responding to a fire at Gadsden Warehousing, located at 600 Bill Austin Drive. Attalla Mayor Larry Means said the blaze began around noon and firefighters from Etowah county initially responded with units from St. Clair County also being contacted.
Gadsden/Etowah EMA officials requested assistance from Cherokee County with units from Spring Creek, Spring Garden, Leesburg, McCords, Ellisville, Broomtown, Tucker’s Chapel and Mt. Weisner responding. Cherokee County EMA officials were also on the scene.
Highway 77 remains closed from Case Avenue to Highway 11 due to the fire. All traffic is being diverted. Fire trucks will be driving back and forth along Highway 77 to refill due to hydrants in the area being completely tapped out. Several firefighters have reportedly been treated for heat related issues.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
Attalla City Schools are closed today (Tuesday) due to the lack of water supply; however, all 240 day employees should report to work as usual today.
Classes are expected to resume tomorrow.
