A Cherokee County woman was hurt in a single-vehicle accident overnight, after reportedly attempting to avoid a driver’s license checkpoint.
According to information provided to WEIS Radio by Leesburg Investigator Jamie Chatman, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Cedar Bluff Police officers were conducting a checkpoint around midnight when they noticed a car turning around in an attempt to avoid the stop.
While Chatman was attempting to catch up with the vehicle, a 2014 Kia Optima, the driver – later identified as 50 year old Natalie Wood Wills from Centre – lost control of the car, left the roadway on County Road 212 and struck a tree.
Wills was transported to the emergency room by Floyd EMS.
Chatman said that crack cocaine and alcohol was found in the Kia, and as a result, Wills was issued citations for DUI and several traffic violations, prior to being released from the ER to go home.
He stated that a charge for Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance is still pending.
Centre Police assisted, with members of the Spring Creek Fire Department and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency responding to the accident scene.
