Mike Welsh has announced he will be a Republican candidate for Superintendent of Education in the March 2020 primary election.  

Welsh says school safety would be his top priority and favors having Resource Officers in our schools without further delay. Other top priorities for Welsh would be keeping class sizes low, adding teachers in the areas of Fine Arts and Computer Programming, and working to develop a long-range capital improvement plan that would effectively address the needs of each campus, including our Career Tech Center.  

Welsh, who has an undergraduate degree from Berry College and a Master’s Degree and Educational Specialist Degree from Jacksonville State University, is a 1987 graduate of Cherokee County High School.

He is a past district officer of the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals and currently represents our district on the Central Board of Control for the Alabama High School Athletic Association.  

Welsh, who is in his 22nd year as principal of Spring Garden School, says he is excited to be a Republican candidate and would be honored to have the opportunity to serve our county as Superintendent of Education.
