Sheriff Mark Schrader Says Investigation into Chattooga County Murders Continues

Chattooga County, Georgia Sheriff Mark Schrader says that his office continues to follow up on leads into the murder of two residents and the shooting and serious wounding of a third in the county last Tuesday.

Steven James Mauldin is being held without bond, charged in connection with the shooting deaths of 35 year old Joe Edward Brown and 61 year old Linda Mae Everett. Daryl Marsh, age 46, remains in critical condition.  Sheriff Schrader told media outlets over the Labor Day Weekend he has investigators standing by to speak with Marsh – if and when he is physically able to talk about the murders.  The sheriff says that his office continues to follow up on other leads and the investigation is on-going.

Mauldin was captured in Coweta County, Georgia last week after he allegedly fled the scene of the murders in a stolen vehicle.

Law enforcement in Georgia and Alabama were on alert for Mauldin for the next thirty-six-hours following the shooting, which took place around 8:00am Tuesday.  Mauldin traveled to Norcross, Georgia and then reportedly to Moody, Alabama with an ex-girlfriend.  She was left in Alabama and Mauldin returned to Georgia where he was subsequently captured after being spotted by Coweta County, Sheriff’s Deputies around 1:00pm Wednesday.

The GBI is assisting in the murder investigation.
