Nelle Brewer

Nelle Brewer age 91 of Centre passed away Thursday August 22rd at Cherokee
Health daughters, Liz Wood of Alexander, Va. and Brenda Hoyt of Boyds,
Md.; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Brewer was a native of Calhoun County and the daughter of the late
Fred and Ola Haynie, and was raised by her paternal aunt and uncle, Maude
and Ellis Gregg. She met her future husband, handsome football player,
Gaines Brewer, at Dadeville High School and they married when Mr. Brewer
returned from the Army after WWII.  They subsequently had three children
and Nelle held a full time job while raising a family and Mr. Brewer was a
full-time student at Auburn University.  Upon graduation from Auburn with
a pharmacy degree, they moved to Centre where their youngest child was
born.  They owned and operated Brewer’s Pharmacy for over 20 years.
She greatly loved following the lives of the children and grandchildren of
their customers long after they sold the drugstore.  Nelle had a witty and
mischievious sense of humor and could find something funny in almost every
situation.   She could watch repeating episodes of “Who Loves
Raymond” and “The Big Bang Theory”, and laugh every time.  She was a
night owl causing the grandkids to say she kept them up too late.  In
later years she did not go out much but she never became irrelevant, as
she was up to date on politics, national news, Centre news, and fashion.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Savannah Blair Brewer, and
her husband, Gaines Brewer.  She is survived by her daughter Liz Wood,
Brenda (Bob) Hoyt, sons, Larry Brewer and Randy Brewer, and grandchildren;
Lacey, Rob, Jessica, Allison, Molly, Colin, and great-grandchildren, Joey,
Cassidy, and Blair.  Her joy was centered in her family, home, and
friends.  She was a longtime member of Centre First Baptist Church.

The family wishes to acknowledge her ever-faithful friends, Reba Hardin,
Marie Wright, Ruth Williams; and her helper; Linda Freeman and Sherry
Wheeler, who made her later years easier and happier.  She will be greatly
missed by those who loved her.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Centre First Baptist Church
Youth Mission Trip.
