Information has been released regarding last week’s arrest of an Etowah County Detention Deputy on charges of drug possession.

Sheriff Jonathon Horton stated that 19-year-old Matthew Rich Keener, who had been on the job for approximately three months was arrested on Friday (May 24th) in the parking lot of an East Gadsden business.  The arrest was made by Sheriff’s Office Investigators and agents of the Etowah County Drug Enforcement Unit – after they received information early Friday morning, and through monitored calls at the jail, that a jailer would be attempting to obtain Suboxone with plans to bring it back into the detention center as he returned to work later that evening.  

The sheriff stated that the Jail investigations team was able to coordinate with the drug unit to intercept the transaction and prevent the Suboxone from coming into the jail.
