Centre Woman Remains Jailed in Floyd County on Multiple Charges Following Friday Incident

A woman who ran from police causing precautionary lockdowns at Cave Spring Elementary and the Georgia School for the Deaf Friday remains jailed in Georgia on multiple charges.

According to Floyd County Police – 51-year-old Kayla LaRay Wright of Centre was stopped by police following a look out from Cherokee County authorities about a vehicle that was taken without permission.  Floyd County Police Department investigators are assisting with the on-going investigation at the request of Cave Spring Police Department.

Cave Spring Elementary, the Georgia School for the Deaf and the Cave Spring Center were all placed on lockdown as a result of the pursuit. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. At 11:14am police were notified of the black Camaro that was taken from here in Cherokee County.  It was later observed by an officer on the lot of Dollar General located at 19 Rome Road.

Major Carl Lively, of the Floyd County PD, and Officer Brittney O’Bryant, of the Cave Spring Police Department, made contact with the driver, Kayla Wright. At some point during the interview Wright attempted to escape and used the vehicle as a weapon against the officers. Officer O’Bryant discharged her weapon at the vehicle engine in an attempt to disable the car, which had reversed at a high rate of speed and struck the Dollar General building. Wright escaped through a window of the car and fled on foot in the direction of the Cave Spring Elementary School.  Officers immediately set a perimeter around the school and neighboring streets for approximately two hours.

Officer Austin Waits with the Floyd County PD observed the suspect running between a set of apartments on Stewart Circle, located near the incident location. She was subsequently arrested without incident. A neighbor reported to police that he observed her taking clothing from a nearby clothesline in an attempt to disguise her appearance.

Wright was arrested and charged with fleeing or attempting to elude, misdemeanor theft by taking, second degree criminal damage to property, hit and run, driving on a suspended or revoked license, giving a false name or date of birth to law enforcement officials, felony obstruction of officers, aggravated assault on a police officer, driving without insurance, no seat belt, reckless driving, and disruption of a public school.
