A former corrections officer was sentenced on Monday to five years in prison for smuggling methamphetamine and other contraband into Hays State Prison in Trion, Georgia. Mark Edward Jeffery, age 34, pleaded guilty in court on Monday, according to U.S. Attorney B.J. Pak.
In February of 2018, a fellow corrections officer saw a large rectangular object wrapped in black electrical tape hidden inside Jeffery’s drink container.
That officer notified a supervisor about possible contraband, and later that day, the prison’s chief of security searched Jeffery and his belongings – finding a plastic bag containing meth, two bags with a total of 190 pills inside, four smartphones, four cellphone chargers, a water bottle filled with alcohol and a brown glass smoking device. Jeffery, from Fairmont, Georgia, was arrested and taken to the Chattooga County jail,
