Reports from local citizens indicate that yet another phone scam is making its rounds, this time with relation to Social Security.

The scam involves residents receiving the telephone calls being met by a recording issuing an immediate threat that the Social Security office is suing the person being called for fraud, and that the called party should dial 1 to be transferred to someone that will try to take payment to drop the fake lawsuit.

One number being used, according to citizen reports to WEIS, traces back to the Gleason, Tennessee area potentially due to number spoofing technologies these scammers have access to. Luckily, the person that reported this scam to us was wise enough to call the Social Security office, who confirmed they do not issue such calls and advice residents who do receive them to hang up immediately and do not provide any personal information.
