Senator Andrew Jones Issues Statement on Senate Bill 2 and Governor Ivey’s “Rebuild Alabama” Plan aka the Gas Tax

WEIS Radio News received an e-mail from Senator Andrew Jones (Sunday night, March 10th) – containing the following statement regarding Senate Bill 2 and Governor Kay Ivey’s “Rebuild Alabama Plan” aka “the Gas Tax” – and it reads as follows:

“On Friday, I was pleased to co-sponsor and help pass a strong oversight bill out of the Senate which holds the Alabama Department of Transportation more accountable.  Additionally, I was able to successfully amend this bill (Senate Bill 2) to allow the legislature to review highway plans for “priority to projects which provide a county with its first four-lane access to an interstate.”  It is my hope that this language may someday assist with securing funding to widen U.S. Highway 411 between Etowah and Cherokee counties.

On Sunday afternoon, I spoke with Governor Kay Ivey about all of the needs within my district, which include the 759 Eastern Connector, Southside Bridge, and U.S. Highway 411. Governor Ivey’s Rebuild Alabama Plan, commonly known as the gas tax, will come before the Senate this week.

After discussing the Governor’s plan with my colleagues, it is clear to me that the votes are already there to pass this legislation through the Senate.  At this point, my number one priority is to get the best possible outcome I can for District 10 in terms of the projects that are important to us.  Given that the gas tax bill is already destined to pass, my vote will hinge upon how confident I am that District 10 is going to benefit from the Governor’s plan.”

Of course, we’ll continue to follow this story closely.
