LATEST UPDATE ON FLOODING CONDITIONS| Local And Statewide State Of Emergency Issued As Flooding Continues

Flooding continues as the lake is still on the rise. According to the National Weather Service the flooding forecast has changed from minor to major severity for the Coosa River at Weiss Dam affecting Cherokee, Calhoun, Etowah, Shelby, St. Clair and Talladega Counties.

Heavy rainfall over the past several days has produced rises along Weiss Lake and a Flood Warning is now in effect for Weiss Dam.

The current Weiss Lake level is at 570ft 3in and still rising. The lake is expected to rise to near 572ft 8in by early Thursday. At 572ft the lake will be eight feet above full summer pool.

We have measured at total of 10.58 inches over a nine day period.

Effective as of Saturday, a Local State of Emergency has been issued for Cherokee County. Probate Judge/Commission Chairman Tim Burgess signed the Proclamation at the recommendation and request of Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency Director Shawn Rogers.

Director Rogers surveyed the damage which is affecting all families and properties in and around the lake.

The Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency is asking that everyone heed all warnings from local authorities during this time. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has also declared a Statewide State of Emergency.

Additionally, the Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency is asking that you no enter flooded areas unless you are a property owner, please do not sight-see in these areas as residents may be trying to salvage what is left of their personal property and this may hinder them from being able to do so.
