Spring Garden Boys Capture Regional Championship

On a day where the county’s girls teams took a lot of gut punches, it was the boys of Spring Garden that finally secured a 1 way ticket to Birmingham following a huge Northeast Regional Championship win on Tuesday at JSU’s Pete Mathews Coliseum.

The #3 ranked Panthers (25-6) out of Class 1A had revenge on the mind when they took on the boys of #5 Skyline (24-9), looking to rectify the girls 1A Northeast Regional Championship because of one simple ideal: “We aren’t letting Skyline beat both of our teams.” Spring Garden lived up to that promise and with it pushed their way forward and towards a 47-40 victory over the Vikings, giving the SG boys their first Regional crown since 2005.

Spring Garden was brought to their Regional Championship by several players, but few more so than Isaiah Sanchez. The All-Regional MVP finished the game off the bench 18 points off 5-12 shooting (2-7 from 3, 6-6 FT), 1 defensive rebound, and 1 steal. Also named to the All-Regional team from the Panthers was Weston Kirk, who finished the title game with 11 points (5-8 shooting, 1-3 from range, 0-1 from the line), 3 rebounds on defense, 2 assists, and 1 steal.

With the win, Spring Garden’s returns to Birmingham and the BJCC for the first time since 2005. They will be matched up with Southwest Regional Champs St. Luke’s on February 25th at 1:30 PM at Legacy Arena. We are looking forward to following the Panthers, and joining SG in cheering on their boys towards an opportunity to bring home the big blue map.
