A fire broke out at the Fort Payne public works building Friday afternoon.
Flames were visible when crews arrived. They contained the fire after a few hours.
Officials confirmed that vehicles and equipment inside sustained little damaged. They said the fire looked worse than it was.
“The building has 16-foot ceilings inside so that allowed the fire and the heat to go to the top so that is where all the heat stayed and it damaged more of the roof than it did anything, so it appears everything on the ground is salvageable,” said public works director Tim Williams.
Operations will not be displaced and will continue from the building.
Officials said the roof will have to be replaced.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The building used to be a National Guard armory.
