The Sand Rock Lady Wildcats won the Class 2A, Area 14 girl’s basketball championship Thursday night with a 63-43 victory over Asbury. Senior point guard Kirby DeBoard was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
She scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out seven assists and blocked a shot. Caley Garrett and Kynleigh Chesnut joined DeBoard on the all-tournament team from Sand Rock. Chesnut had 11 points and Garrett netted 18, including three 3-pointers.
Lanie Henderson rounded out the double-digit scorers with 17 points, including three treys. The Lady Wildcats, coached by Lisa Bates, will host North Sand Mountain In sub-regional play on Monday.
The Spring Garden Lady Panthers clinched the Class 1A, Area 11 girl’s basketball tournament championship Thursday with a 73-23 victory over Coosa Christian. Macy Reedy was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after scoring 23 points, including four 3-pointers. The Lady Panthers, coached by Ricky Austin, will host a sub-regional game on Monday against either Talladega County Central or Winterboro.
The Spring Garden Panthers won the Class 1A, Area 11 boy’s basketball championship Thursday night with a 71-53 victory over Jacksonville Christian. Isiah Sanchez was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after a 37-point performance, including five 3-pointers. The Panthers, coached by Ricky Austin, will host the Area 9 runner-up on Tuesday night in sub-regional action.
