Cherokee County Officials met in the EMA Office at 10:00 Monday morning for the latest weather briefing from the National Weather Service concerning the snow event coming in overnight and into Tuesday.  Governmental leaders and decision makers will now start formulating plans for emergency operations and we should start receiving those this afternoon.

At this time, the National Weather Service Forecast is calling for rain to begin over the northeast Alabama area at around midnight and then transition over to snow between 3:00 and 6:00am with the greatest impact on travel being during this time.  The snowfall amounts are still forecast to be from one to three inches – depending on just how fast or slow the system develops and moves across the area. At times the snowfall rate could be as much as two inches per hour in some locations.

The State Department of Transportation is pre-treating the state highway routes across the region to help minimize the snow effect on travel.  The County Highway Department is placing equipment at strategic locations across the county today and employees will be taking their county vehicles home tonight so they can begin work to help clear the roads early on Tuesday.
