A small, but important, change is coming to all new Alabama driver’s licenses. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says it’ll soon be adding an extra digit to driver’s license numbers in an effort to accommodate the state’s growing population. Beginning on December 1st all new driver’s licenses, and non-driver ID’s, will contain eight numbers instead of the current seven. The longer numbers have already been used on state-issued non-driver ID’s.
The change will not affect current Alabama driver’s license holders. The format for driver’s licenses varies from state-to-state, with some – such as Alabama – dictating a specific set of numbers while others – such as Colorado and Missouri – include a combination of numbers and letters.
