According to Summerville Police Department reports around 9:30pm last Saturday a patrol officer was dispatched, following a 9-1-1 call stating that a PT Cruiser traveling southbound into Summerville was weaving all over the roadway.
When the officer caught up with the vehicle in front of the Earl Rainwater Funeral Home, it was still swerving. The officer pulled over the driver – identified as 44 year old Shawn Basil Collins – who, according to the report, was slurring his words and had bloodshot eyes.
Collins passed a breathalyzer test, but he did poorly on field sobriety tests conducted by the officer. Collins allegedly admitted to smoking synthetic marijuana earlier in the day, and he also informed the officer that there was some in his car. A search of the vehicle also turned up an open bottle of wine and kratom in Collins’ vehicle. Kratom is a drug that has recently gained popularity in the state of Georgia as a legal, unregulated “herbal supplement” which produces a high similar to that of marijuana.
Georgia’s state legislature has recently started researching the safety and effects of kratom.
Collins was arrested and charged with:
- Failure to maintain lane.
- Possession of an open container of alcohol.
