SCAM ALERT! / Scammers Claiming to be with the IRS and/or Social Security Administration

A number of local residents have recently been contacted by someone calling claiming to be with the Social Security Administration OR the IRS – and we can promise you, in either case – they’re LYING.

It’s very simple.  Social Security and the IRS will NEVER contact you by phone – if they need to get in touch with you, they’ll contact you through the U.S. Mail.

In some cases they’re telling people they have their social security number, and giving them a number to call.  Don’t do it.  As a matter of fact – don’t listen to them; don’t talk to them – just hang up.  End of story.  It’s a scam.  They’re trying to get information from you that they don’t need.

Residents have also reported that scammers have called wanting to CONFIRM the numbers on their new Medicare Card, so they can “activate” them.  Well, there’s no need for that since your new card doesn’t have to be “activated” – it’s ready to use the day you receive it.

These scams are targeted primarily at older adults; it’s important that you inform everyone you know about these calls and take steps to protect loved ones against the vicious attempt to steal from those who may not be aware of how a con like this works.
