IRS Scam Making the Rounds Yet Again in Cherokee County

One Cherokee County resident reported to WEIS Radio that he’d received a “disturbing” call on Monday from someone claiming to be with the IRS.

They told him that he owed $4,992 and unless he paid immediately they would take his car, take his house, seize his bank account, garnish his wages – and have law enforcement come to his house and arrest him within two hours.

Wow.  That’s a full day’s work for anybody.

They even made up a phony “case #” to make everything sound a little more legit.  Which of course, none of it is.

Here we go again.  It’s a scam – it’s a scam – it’s a scam.

Everything was done in an attempt to get personal, private information – such as a credit or debit card number or bank account number – anything which will allow them to access the money in the victim’s account or their line of credit.  Fortunately, in this case the person receiving the call didn’t give out any such information.

The number the fake IRS agent used was 1-559-286-0103.  That number has been reported across the nation as having been used in this same scam; of course, other numbers could be used as well.  Other similar calls have been reported as well.  One caller even told us she received a call from someone purporting to be with the Social Security Administration, and unless she complied with their demand for money she’d be sued by – yes, Social Security!  What a world.

And as for all that stuff at the beginning of the story; the real IRS doesn’t work that way and they don’t send law enforcement out to “arrest you in two hours”; if you really do owe them anything, you’ll get a letter through the U.S. Postal Service.

If you receive any calls such as this – just hang up.
