Alabama State Troopers Report Fewer Traffic Deaths Over Christmas and New Year’s Holiday Travel Periods

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Wednesday released information on the number of fatal traffic crashes worked by troopers over the Christmas and New Year Holiday Travel periods stretching from 12:01am Saturday December 16th 2017 until midnight January 1st 2018.

During that time they investigated a total of 23 traffic-related deaths, compared to a total of 31 for the same time period the year before.

Those fatal crashes were in Autauga, Baldwin, Calhoun, Choctaw, Colbert, Coosa, Crenshaw, Cullman, Dallas, DeKalb, Escambia, Geneva, Limestone, Mobile, Russell, St. Clair, Shelby and Washington counties.

Killed were 16 drivers, four passengers, two pedestrians and one bicyclist and of those who died 20 of those victims were traveling in vehicles equipped with seat belts however eleven of them were not using them.

State troopers did see five zero-fatality days during the holiday travel period including both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

In 2017, troopers investigated a total of 598 traffic deaths, 73 fewer than in 2016.
