AAA Offering Free Towing On New Year’s Eve To Prevent Drunk Driving

AAA Alabama and wrecker services across the state are offering free towing on New Year’s Eve to prevent drunk driving.

This is the 31st year of “Tow-for-Life,” a program that offers a free ride and tow for anyone who has too much to drink between 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Towing is free up to 10 miles. Anyone can use the service, including those who are not AAA members.

According to the CDC, 10,265 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2015. That’s 29 percent of all traffic-related deaths in the U.S. That year, 1.1 million drivers were arrested for DUI.

AAA said in the news release it encourages party-goers who drink alcohol to appoint a designated driver. Party hosts should prevent guests from driving after drinking by calling a taxi to take them home, allowing the guest to spend the night or by making other arrangements to keep them safe.
