Piedmont Man Charged With Murder

A Piedmont man is charged with murder after killing another man at a residence during the early morning hours of Friday in the 600 block of Draper St.

According to Piedmont Police Chief Freddie Norton, officers were sent to the residence in reference to an unresponsive male bleeding from an unknown location. Officers and the Piedmont Rescue Squad arrived on scene and determined that the male was bleeding from the back of his head.

The male was transported to Gadsden Regional Medical Center by Piedmont Rescue Squad and later transferred to UAB where he died from Blunt Force Trauma.

Officers interviewed a witness and were also able to locate and interview several other witnesses that had left the scene prior to officer’s arrival. Officers at that time were able to locate and arrest 40 year old Piedmont resident Edward Maurice Johnson for Murder.

Johnson’s bond was set at $150,000 and has a Preliminary Hearing court date of January 15, 2018. The deceased male was identified as Marion Brown, 53 years of age from Piedmont, by Calhoun County Assistant Coroner Jay Bowden.

The body will be sent to the Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville for an autopsy.
