Photo by Robert Alexander/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The Allied Pilots Association, the union that represents pilots for American Airlines, says the company has thousands of flights this holiday season without assigned pilots due to a computer failure involving the company’s scheduling system.
The APA and American Airlines have been involved in a long contract negotiation over pilots’ pay.
Pilots for the airline used to be the highest paid of the major American airlines, but have fallen from that perch in recent years. The contract between the airline and the union is not due for renewal until 2020, but APA has been pushing to renegotiate early.
According to the union, management at American “disclosed a failure within the pilot schedule bidding system” last week that left thousands of flights without assigned pilots.
