Piedmont and Sand Rock Earn Runner-Up Finishes in State Cheerleading Competition

2017: Piedmont and Sand Rock earn runner-up finishes in State Cheerleading Competition

HANCEVILLE – Nine state champions were crowned at the State Cheerleading Competition administered by Varsity Brands at Wallace-Hanceville Community College Saturday.

A state champion was named in each of the seven classifications of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) and one champion was selected in the Co-Ed competition.  Sparkman High School was named the Co-Ed champion with Thompson the runner-up. Mary Montgomery captured the non-build division and R.A. Hubbard was second. The Class 7A state championship ended with the judges deadlocked between Vestavia Hills (359.20) and Hoover (359.20), both tying with the best team score of the day. The Rebels won the title, however, in the tie breaker. The Bucs finished second.  Meek won the 1A title with a narrow win over Ragland. Only .40 separated the two top finishers in the AHSAA’s smallest division. A record number of teams competed in this year’s championships.
