Wall Street hit mid-day highs, stocks lose steam late on positive trading day

JaysonPhotography/iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — After all three major indices hit intraday highs, stocks lost some steam late in trading on what was still a positive day for Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 57.77, closing the day at 23,435.01.

The Nasdaq dropped 11.14, ending trading at 6,716.53, while the S&P 500 edged up to 2,579.36, gaining 4.1 from its open.

The Federal Reserve chose not to hike interest rates today. Fed Chair Janet Yellen, however, said an increase is coming.

Payroll processor ADP said the job market has rebounded from down numbers in September. The market added 235,000 jobs last month, including 60,000 in construction.

Facebook put out its third quarter earnings report after the bell Wednesday. The report showed earnings well above expectations, and $10.3 billion in revenue.
