US stocks close little changed ahead of earnings season

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — U.S. stocks finished little changed on Monday ahead of the earnings season.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 12.60 (-0.06 percent) to finish at 22,761.07.

The Nasdaq gave up 10.45 (-0.16 percent) to close at 6,579.73, while the S&P 500 finished at 2,544.73, down 4.60 (-0.18 percent) from its open.

Crude oil was about 0.45 percent higher with prices at $49.50 per barrel.

Winners and Losers:  Shares of General Electric sunk 3.94 percent after news that Trian Fund Management founding partner Ed Garden would join GE’s board. The company also announced on Friday that CFO Jeff Bornstein would be out by the end of the year.

In its ongoing battle with e-commerce competitor Amazon.com, Walmart revealed plans to simplify its process for returning online merchandise. The retail giant’s stock climbed 1.94 percent.
