Giancarlo Stanton sets Marlins single season HR record

Alan Kee/ESPN Images(MIAMI) — Nobody in baseball is on a run like Giancarlo Stanton. In his last 34 games he’s hit 22 home runs, including one Monday night against the San Francisco Giants in an 8-3 victory.

It was Stanton’s 43rd home run of the season, breaking Miami’s record for the most homers in a season set by Gary Sheffield in 1996, and it came in just the 117th game of the season.

Speaking after the game with ESPN, Stanton said he’s made a lot of adjustments since he’s returned from the All Star break, where he put on quite the show for the hometown fans in the Home Run Derby.

In addition to adjusting his stance and watching more film of his swing, Stanton said keeping a simple approach at the plate has helped him.

When asked what home run total excites him, Stanton said he’s always wanted to hit 62, but he’s not sure he can get there. Sixty-one was the record held by Roger Maris in his 1961 season, and lasted up until 1998 when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa hit 70 and 66 long balls respectively. Sosa ended up breaking 61 to more times, while McGwire did it once more. Barry Bonds holds the overall record of 73 in 2001.
