A suspect was shot by a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Tuesday afternoon.

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader told media outlets that county deputies had been assisting the Summerville Police Department in investigating a “smash and grab” robbery that occurred in Summerville on Monday night.

Law enforcement located the suspect, now identified as 19 year old Devon DeShawn Ward of Atlanta, who fled the scene.  A deputy later spotted the suspect and gave chase on foot; as the deputy attempted to apprehend Ward, there was a struggle. Sheriff Schrader said that the Ward grabbed the deputy’s gun; the deputy was then able to get the weapon back and shot the suspect in the abdomen.  Ward was transported by Lifeforce to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, where he’s reportedly listed in serious but stable condition.

Sheriff Schrader said that he has contacted the GBI who will be investigating the shooting of the suspect by the deputy which is standard procedure.

The Deputy involved is Agent Caine Railey who is a deputy sheriff with the Sheriff’s Office and is currently assigned to the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force as a narcotics investigator.
