Paul D. McDonald, Cherokee County Chief Deputy Coroner has participated in multiple investigative training classes and seminars throughout the state since beginning to serve the county in 2016. Recently, Paul has completed the Jacksonville State University Center For Applied Forensics Crime Scene Investigation Course.

This training consists of over 40 hours of both didactic classroom lectures as well as field training in areas such as Defining a Crime Scene, Recognizing and Protecting Evidence, Crime Scene Documentation, Collecting/Packing Evidence, and Mock Crime Scene Practicals. Paul has also completed the Child Injury and Death Scene Re-enactment course through the Alabama Department of Public Health.

This 8 hour course focuses on importance of scene reconstruction for Sudden, Unexplained, Infant Death Syndrome cases. These combined training totals 48 hours of instruction which was provided at no cost to Cherokee County. Dr. Deaton, Cherokee County Coroner states, “the county is blessed to have Paul McDonald serving as Chief Deputy Coroner. His extensive background in law enforcement, Emergency Medical Services, and Fire Service provide deep credibly and integrity to death investigations that he is a part of.

These training’s are invaluable when our office is called to investigate any suspicious deaths, especially to those that could be criminal in nature. No human being wants to deal with child or infant death, but being able to reconstruct the events just prior to the child’s demise is critical in providing answers to family’s questions, as well as bringing closure to the family.

”Kirk Day, Probate Judge and Chairman of the Cherokee County Commission adds, “ Since joining the Cherokee County family almost a year ago, Chief Deputy Coroner Paul McDonald has proven himself to be a consummate professional. He has rendered great service to the county and aid to our citizens in their greatest hour of need.”
