Apple testing face scanning sign-in for the next iPhone

Creatas/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Apple is developing a feature that would allow users to unlock their iPhones by scanning their face, according to a Bloomberg report.

The function would operate similar to Apple’s fingerprint sign-in design that is available on more recent iPhones.

It is not clear if the new system would be features on the redesigned iPhone, which is set to be released later in 2017. Face scanning would allow users to sign in to their phones, authenticate payments, and launch secure apps “by scanning their face,” according to Bloomberg sources. Apple is also testing an eye scanning security system.

Apple’s new feature is expected to work quickly, scanning a user’s face to unlock the iPhone within milliseconds. Bloomberg reports face scanning will also work if the device is lying flat on a hard surface.

Apple is still testing the feature.
