8 Year Old Child Airlifted To Children’s Hospital After Near Drowning At Canyon Mouth Park

Emergency crews responded to the fourth near drowning in the area on Sunday afternoon. Cherokee EMS crews and First Responders with the Tucker’s Chapel Fire Department in addition to National Park Service Rangers and Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to Cherokee Mouth Park on County Road 275 in response to a 911 call reporting an 8 year old child was found under the water unresponsive.

Bystanders pulled the child from the water and began CPR until Firefighters and Medics arrived on the scene. The child was rushed from the park to Leesburg where he was airlifted to TC Thompson Children’s Hospital at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.

The second near drowning in as many days was reported at the Piedmont Aquatic Center just before noon on Saturday. According to Piedmont Rescue Squad Chief Phillip Winkles a 4 year old male was found by the lifeguard floating face down unresponsive. Someone in the pool handed the child out of the water and to the lifeguard who immediately began chest thrusts and back blows expelling most of the water from the child.

According to Winkles the child became responsive at that point and was placed in what is referred to as the ‘recovery position’. The victim was airlifted by Air Evac to Children’s Hospital and as of 5:00 p.m. Sunday remains in Stable Condition. Winkles commended the actions of the Lifeguard, 17 year old Ethan Cooper a 17 year old High School Student.

A four year old boy was also airlifted to Children’s Hospital after nearly drowning at the Aquatic Center on Wednesday. That child apparently got into water over his head and was under the water 3-4 seconds before he was pulled out safely by lifeguards.

The Piedmont Police and Fire Departments also assisted Piedmont Rescue.

On Friday a two year old child was airlifted to TC Thompson Children’s Hospital after nearly drowning in a swimming pool at a residence on County Road 407 in the Bay Springs area.
