Uber receives permit to test self-driving cars in California

Uber(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) — Uber has received a permit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to return its self-driving cars to the roads.

Uber is now on a list on the DMV website of companies allowed to test autonomous vehicle technology within the state’s limits. The ride sharing company had previously launched tests of those vehicles in San Francisco last year, but had the registrations revoked because it hadn’t secured a testing permit from the state.

The San Francisco Examiner says that Uber will deploy only two SUVs with a self-driving kit, compared to the 16 it had initially launched. A list of 48 specifically named drivers are allowed to operate the cars.

Tech website TechCrunch says that Uber won’t be picking up passengers for its initial testing.
