Senate Subcommittee to Investigate Russian Efforts to Influence Elections

Credit: US Senate(WASHINGTON) — The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism announced Thursday that it would investigate Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election, as well as other elections around the world.

In a statement, the subcommitee’s Chairman, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Ranking Member, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., said that their goal is to “shine a light on Russian activities to undermine democracy.”

“While some of our efforts will have to be held behind closed doors due to security concerns, we also hope to have an open discussion before the American people about Russia’s strategies to undermine democracy.”

Intelligence has indicated that Russia did make an effort to interfere in the 2016 election. Graham has been a public critic of some of President Trump’s actions so far.

“Our efforts will be guided by the belief that we have an obligation to follow the facts wherever they may lead,” the two senators said in their statement.
