Volkswagen Reaches Deal to Repurchase or Recall Emissions-Cheating Vehicles

Sean Gallup/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) — Volkswagen has reached a deal with U.S. regulators to repurchase or recall over 80,000 vehicles affected in its emissions cheating scandal.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco announced that Volkswagen will recall about 63,000 diesel-powered vehicles with 3-liter engines and attempt to fix them in compliance with their certified emissions standards.

Volkswagen will also offer to buyback or terminate the lease for 20,000 of the older vehicles, the judge said.

In a separate agreement, the automaker is set to provide “monetary relief” to owners of the affected cars, which include newer Volkwagen, Audi and Porsche diesel vehicles.

Volkwagen has also agreed to pay an additional $225 million to an environmental remediation trust and another $25 million to support zero emissions vehicles in California, according to the court filing.

“The agreement announced by the Court today between Volkswagen and U.S. environmental regulators is another important step forward in our efforts to make things right for our customers, and we support the efforts of the Court to bring about a fair and reasonable resolution of remaining 3.0L TDI V6 claims as quickly as possible,” Volkswagen Group of America CEO Hinrich Woebcken said in a statement. “We are committed to earning back the trust of all our stakeholders and thank our customers and dealers in the United States for their patience as the process moves forward.”
