Latest Weiss Lake Improvement Association Project

water-1

Recently, as water levels were low in Weiss Lake, the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources provided 200 Buttonbush plants.  The department’s Kyle Bolton – with assistance from Weiss Lake Improvement Association President Mark Collins, planted them in the Little River area.  Common buttonbush is a spreading, multi-branched shrub or small tree with numerous branches, balls of white flowers resembling pincushions – and a variety of button-like balls of fruit.

Buttonbush is an ornamental suited to wet soils, and is also a honey plant.  Ducks and other water birds and shorebirds consume the seeds.  Buttonbush plants attract many species of bees, birds and butterflies.

This is one of the many projects Weiss Lake Improvement Association is involved in.

To find out more about that organization, make plans to attend one of their board meetings, held the second Thursday of each month in the Meeting Room at the County Administrative Building on Cedar Bluff Road in Centre.
