A husband and wife were arrested by the Collinsville Police Department over the weekend, charged with Theft of Lost Property.
According to information contained in a News Release from the police department, Cristina Valasquez Mejia and Julio Alco Simon, were both taken into custody in the parking lot of the Collinsville Piggly Wiggly on Saturday after a complaint was filed with police.
A female customer of the store made a report saying that she had accidentally left her purse and a large sum of cash in her shopping cart after loading her groceries into the car.
After realizing what she’d done, the woman quickly returned to the parking lot, only to find that her purse was gone. Deputy Chief Rex Leath soon located the vehicle the two suspects were in and made contact with a juvenile at the residence who claimed that the adults were not at home.
Both subjects turned themselves in the following morning, and gave statements about what had happened. The pair returned $3,600 – and admitted to burning credit cards, along with personal information found in the purse.
Deputy Leath said the incident had been captured on the Piggly Wiggly surveillance system.
Both Mejia and Simon were booked in at the DeKalb County Detention Center, on charges of First Degree Theft of Lost Property – which is a felony.
