Samsung's Offices in South Korea Raided Over Political Scandal

JUNG YEON-JE/AFP/Getty Images(SEOUL) — Samsung Electronics’ offices in Seoul were raided by prosecutors, according to BBC, as South Korean authorities continue to investigate a corruption probe of the country’s president.

Samsung confirmed the news to BBC and had “no further comment.”

Choi Soon-sil, the daughter of a cult leader, is accused of using her close friendship with South Korean President Park Geun-hye to interfere with policy and solicit Korean business donations for foundations she controlled.

Prosecutors are investigating allegations that Samsung gave $3.1 million to a company owned by Choi, that funded daughter Chung Yoo-ra’s equestrian training in Germany. Officials said that documents relating to business dealings between Samsung and the Korea Equestrian Federation were seized in the raid, according to the Korea Times.

Choi was taken into custody last week and the Seoul Central District Court issued a warrant Friday to formally arrest her on charges of fraud and abuse of power.

Tens of thousands of South Koreans have protested in Seoul, demanding Park’s resignation. In wake of the scandal, the president has delivered an emotional apology on TV, admitted that Choi had edited some of her speeches, and replaced her prime minister as well as several aides.
