"Doctor Strange" Makes Box Office Magic with $85 Million Debut

Marvel Studios/Disney(NEW YORK) — Disney and Marvel’s Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, cast its spell the box office with an estimated $84.9 million opening weekend, outperforming the studio’s other single-character intros, Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor. It’s the tenth largest opening overall for a Marvel movie, according to Box Office Mojo.

Marvel is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.

Trolls, the animated feature starring the voices of Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick, brought in an estimated $45.6 million for a second-place finish. Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson’s war drama starring Andrew Garfield, finished third with an estimated $14.75 million in earnings.

Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween finished fourth after topping the weekend box office two weeks in a row. Inferno, starring Tom Hanks, fell to fifth place five in just its second week, earning $6.3 million.
