iStock/Thinkstock(NORCIA, Italy) — Rescuers came across an unexpected sight while scouring the rubble in the quake-ravaged town of Norcia, just three miles from the epicenter of a 6.6 magnitude temblor that rocked central Italy on Sunday.
Flashlights brightening the darkness on Tuesday night spotted the head of small puppy poking out of the rubble and yelping.
A team from the national fire and rescue service combing the town were alerted to the pup’s presence by his yelping and guided to his location by their own dog, trained to sniff out survivors that can’t be seen or heard from the top of the mounds of debris that were once large stone buildings.
The pup, Ulysses, was checked out by a veterinarian from Italy’s National Animal Protection Agency and is said to have come out of the ordeal remarkably well, with no fractures or other major injuries.
