Projected Rise in Thanksgiving Air Travel

iStock/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) – Airlines for America, the industry trade organization for the leading airlines in the United States, projected on Wednesday that 27.3 million passengers will travel globally on U.S. airlines during this year’s Thanksgiving period. That’s up 2.5 percent from last year’s estimated 26.6 million passengers.

Throughout the 12-day period ranging from Nov. 18 to Nov. 29, Airlines for America (A4A) projects that U.S. airlines will carry 2.27 million passengers a day.

“The airline industry remains highly competitive, which directly benefits consumers as airfares continue to fall, providing even more opportunities for people to travel for Thanksgiving and throughout the year,” A4A Vice President and Chief Economist John Heimlich said in a statement. “Airlines are adding capacity to accommodate the increased demand, and travelers should rest assured that while more people will be flying, there will be more than an adequate number of seats available.”

The busiest day of travel is expected to Sunday, Nov. 27, while the lightest day is expected to be Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24.
