Historical Preservation Society Meeting
The Public is Invited to Attend (no admittance fee)
When: Thursday, October 27 @ 6:00 pm
Where: Cherokee County Historical Museum
101 East Main Street, Centre, AL
Program : Southern Claims Commission
Presenter: Adet Stephens
This program will shed light on the roll Cherokee County citizens played in the Civil War. Not all citizens of Cherokee County were in favor of succession from the Union. Few were slave holders and did not wish to see the United States torn apart. The families of this County experienced first hand what it meant to have brother fight against brother, father against son, and neighbors against neighbors because of their support of the Union or the Southern causes.
The Historical Preservation Society will be presenting accounts from Southern Claims Commission files of people from Cherokee County who submitted claims. These people remained loyal to the Union and suffered losses when the Union Army foraged throughout the area. You may be surprised to discover some of your ancestors are listed among those who filed claims. A list of names of those from Cherokee County who filed claims will be available to review.
