A DeKalb County native, known far and wide as a member of one of the most popular music groups of the late 60’s, passed away Wednesday (July 27th, 2016).

Pat Upton, a resident of Geraldine and lead singer of the Spiral Starecase has died at the age of 75; if the name doesn’t ring a bell, the song surely will:

I Love You More Today Than Yesterday peaked at #16 on the Hot 100 back in 1969.

UPTON 4Following the eventual break-up of the band Upton went back to being a “session musician” – as a matter of fact, he played guitar on Ricky Nelson’s final album.   Upton also toured with Nelson from time to time, and he played on stage with him at his final show, taking place on on December 30th of 1985 at PJ’s Alley in Guntersville – a club owned by Upton.

Nelson tragically died in a plane crash on his way to Dallas after leaving Guntersville.

Upton drove his friend to the airport, and over the years told interviewers he dealt with the loss as best he could and “tried not to dwell on it,”

Pat Upton was a highly respected, performer, businessman and member of his community – funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
