A Special Fourth of July Holiday message from Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver
The Fourth of July is a time we all enjoy getting together and celebrating the holiday with family and friends. It is also a time for increased accidents and fatalities, so be careful and remember these safety tips:
Safe Driving:
Don’t drink and drive, it’s that simple.
Avoid distractions like cell phones, no texting!
Buckle up!
Obey speed limits
Water Safety:
Alcohol and watercraft don’t mix
Everyone wear a lifejacket
Be on the lookout for people or obstacles in the water
Keep alert for changing weather conditions
Get away from water and go inside if you see lightning
Grilling Safety:
Keep grill away from the house, deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire
Supervise the grill at all times and keep children and pets a safe distance away
Never add charcoal starter fluid after coals are lit
Check gas grills for leaks before use
Hot Weather Safety:
Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and avoid alcohol
Watch for signs of heat stroke – hot, red skin; rapid, weak pulse; rapid, shallow breathing; loss of consciousness
Fireworks Safety:
Only adults should handle fireworks (even sparklers can reach 1800°F)
Wear safety goggles when lighting
Never try to re-light a “dud”
Keep a bucket of water on hand and douse used fireworks and duds
Keep pets inside that might be frightened and run away
Also, be mindful not to disturb close neighbors. In Alabama, it is illegal to ignite fireworks within 600 feet of a hospital, church, public school, or an enclosed building.
In short, just use good common sense and especially keep an eye on children. Everyone have a safe and happy Fourth!
