Bain Hammett was an extremely active, healthy child until December 2012, when at the age of four, he was found unresponsive and having seizures.
A CAT Scan at Floyd Medical Center in Rome showed several areas of swelling on the brain; Bain was then transferred to Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta where he spent around three weeks in the Intensive Care Unit; most of that in a medically induced coma, to prevent any further swelling of the brain.
This was followed by several weeks of intensive rehab therapy at Scottish Rite Hospital and several more weeks of similar therapy once he returned home.
Since that time Bain has continued to recover and medical expenses are on-going.
As part of the fundraising effort to help offset medical expenses, Bain’s family members and friends will be at the former K-Mart location in Centre conducting a “Shoe Drive”; the public is encouraged to donate any shoes which aren’t broken (and they MUST be in pairs) to help the cause. All sizes are welcome and they can also take steel toe boots from the employees at KTH.
These shoes will be turned in to agencies who specialize in the collection of such items with all proceeds going toward the purchase of a handicap-accessible van.
That event will be going on this Saturday (May 14th), from 10:00am – 2:00pm; and, another “Shoes for Bain” fundraiser will be held in the same location the second week of June; shoes will be collected through the end of June.
Also look for them at Leesburg Park Saturday, May 21st during the “KTH Color Run”; family members will be at the registration table starting at 7:30 that morning.
