Bobby Beckett

The horn has sounded and the final whistle blown for Coach Bobby Beckett of Centre, Alabama who passed away on April 13 at the age of 75

Mr. Beckett was a member of the Centre First Methodist Church.

Mr. Beckett was a graduate of Winterboro High School and Livingston State University (currently West Alabama). He was a proud Vietnam veteran and served in 1967-68.

Mr. Beckett was happiest when teaching and coaching high school sports. He coached at West Jefferson, Ragland, Cherokee County, Gaylesville, Collinsville, Gadsden City and Chattooga High Schools. He truly loved every school, community, student and fellow teacher and had a great passion for the education field.

Mr. Beckett’s career was highlighted by winning two state-championships at Cherokee County High School. Baseball State Runner up at Ragland, assistant Basketball State Runner up at Ragland and football runner up as an assistant at Cherokee County High. Mr. Beckett was apart of 471 wins in football, baseball, track, boys and girls basketball.

Mr. Beckett helped start or restart baseball at Cherokee County, Ragland and Gaylesville, as well as, girls basketball at Cherokee County.

In 2009, he was elected to the Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame and the high school baseball field at Cherokee County is named after him.

Bobby Beckett is survived by his wife of 52 years Peggy, son Alan Beckett, daughter in law Amanda Beckett, grandchildren Madison Beckett, Tallie Beckett and Fletcher Beckett.

Mr. Beckett was proceded in death by his parents Louis and Ada Harwell Beckett, his brothers Dustin Maddox, Eugene Maddox and a sister Nova Maddox Swint.

Memorials may be made to the Centre First Methodist Church and American Cancer Society.

Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Friday April 15th at Centre 1st United Methodist Church Edge, where he will lie-in-state an hour prior to service time; with burial to follow at Cherokee Memory Gardens. The family will accept friends from 5 to 8 P.M. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home.
